Join us for a panel presentation focusing on the children\u2019s writing of Maurice Gee, the celebrated New Zealand writer who died in June this year.<\/strong>

A panel presentation celebrating Maurice Gee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This evening event at Victoria University\u2019s Pipitea Campus will celebrate the writing of New Zealand author Maurice Gee, who died recently, aged 93. Emeritus Professor Kathryn Walls will introduce the panel discussion. She will be joined by Kate de Goldi, Claire Mabey, Anna Jackson, Harry Ricketts, Dr Tatjana Schaefer, and Dr Vivien van Rij.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Light refreshments are available from 5:30pm. The panel discussion starts at 6pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This free event is hosted by the Friends of the Dorothy Neal White Collection and Victoria University\u2019s International Institute of Modern Letters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All are welcome.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

AGM and Constitution Approval<\/h3>\n\n\n\n


Members and potential members are cordially invited to this year\u2019s AGM:
When: 11 June 2025, 5.30pm for a 6.00pm meeting
Where: National Library Tiakiwai Conference Centre, lower ground floor. (Use the
Aitken Street entrance)
Our business this year includes approving our new Constitution, which the committee
has updated to meet the requirements of the Charities Amendment Act 2023. A copy
of the Constitution is attached for you to read before the meeting. We will be taking
proxy votes from members who are unable to attend when we vote on the motion to
accept the updated constitution. The motion will be:
\u201cThat the revised constitution for The Friends of the Dorothy Neal White Collection be
accepted, and reregistration documents be submitted to the Companies Office by the
committee by 31 August 2025.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a young boy Arthur Ransome read the works of Robert Louis Stevenson with enthusiasm, and in his mid-20s he was commissioned to write a biography of Stevenson. What happened to that work? In this talk Kirsty Findlay explores how Arthur Ransome’s ‘Stevenson’ was brought to publication one hundred years later than intended.
The speaker, Kirsty N Findlay<\/strong>, graduate of VUW and Cambridge, was a member of the English Department at VUW and the University of Waikato before eventually heading the Drama examiner team at Trinity College London. She mainly lives on a beck in Cumbria where she has planted New Zealand bush within sight of Arthur Ransome\u2019s Kanchenjunga.<\/p>\n\n\n

In this talk, the Director of Katherine Mansfield House & Garden Cherie Jacobson, will introduce the life and work of New Zealand artist Edith Kathleen Bendall (EKB). Today Edith is usually mentioned in the context of her relationship with writer Katherine Mansfield, but in early 20th-century Wellington, Edith was a popular artist and illustrator in her own right. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ethical Representations of Trauma
\nIn Young Adult Literature<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How can trauma be represented ethically in YA literature? PhD candidate Talia
\nCrockett\u2019s upcoming dissertation examines a variety of YA novels that explore the
\ndiverse traumas of the Holocaust, postcolonial displacement, and parental abuse,
\nwhile also exploring the evolution of trauma theory and the resulting shifts in YA
\nliterature. Talia received a research grant from the Friends of the Dorothy Neal White
\nCollection in 2021 and has used both the Dorothy Neal White Collection and the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

National Children\u2019s Collection as part of her research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nHannah\nParry<\/strong>\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nHannah\nis the author of The\nUnlikely Escape of Uriah Heep<\/em>,\nA\nDeclaration of the Rights of Magicians.<\/em>\nShe gained her PhD in English Literature at Victoria University\nwriting about children\u2019s fantasy and the epic tradition before\nbecoming a full-time writer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nThe\nUnlikely Escape of Uriah Heep<\/em>,\nHannah\u2019s first novel,\nis set in Wellington and tells the story of two adult brothers, the\nelder a determinedly normal lawyer, the younger a Dickens scholar\nwith the magical and often inconvenient ability to read fictional\ncharacters out of books and into the real world. The book is adult\nfantasy, but it grew from Hannah\u2019s long-standing interest in\nchildren’s books, both as an academic and as a reader. In her talk\nHannah will discuss the themes and characters from children’s books\nthat made it into her own book, and how a PhD in children’s books\nturned into writing a children’s book for adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
